Eyeshadow before or after foundation? | The Pros and Cons

Do you do your eyeshadow before or after foundation? Ohh this has been the subject of many heated debates! It is almost as important as Brexit, you know!  Where do I stand on this? You will soon see. We will go through the pros and cons of doing your eyeshadow before or after foundation, but at the end of the day it is up to you. Like I always say there are different paths to achieve the ultimate slay. I’ve seen some people apply makeup in such a way that I am left shook! Not in a good way. But when I see them at the end, they are super super snatched! Not even one ‘super’ you know. So my advice is test both ways and see what works for you.

Is it ‘do your eyeshadow, turn all the way up, say goodbye to those hater friends who say that knowing all the words to Justin Beiber is lame, then do your foundation?’ OR is it do foundation, say goodbye to wastemen and Ghanian jollof rice, do your eyeshadow then booking your flight to Wakanda?! Whatever floats your boat hun! Do you!

You are not worried about eyeshadow fall out messing your foundation. It’s hard work when you have finished your base and eyeshadow falls onto your face, and you try to get rid of it. Try removing black eyeshadow from your face without it smudging….it is hella long! Talk less of when you have applied your foundation and concealer.

It is easier to correct mistakes especially with your winged liner. You can take it off and start again quite quickly as you haven’t applied your foundation or anything else.

When I apply eyeshadow, I have a tendency to touch or rest on the top of my cheeks with my hand. If I did my foundation first and start touching my face whilst applying my eyeshadow, I will start to move my foundation or rub some of it off.

If you are in a rush, you may find yourself spending too much time on your eyeshadow, blending and blending away and not spending enough time on your foundation, concealer and others. Arguably,  blending your foundation and concealer needs more time for the flawless look.

Your slay face is practically finished by the time you do your eyeshadow. All that you need to do after applying your foundation, concealer, highlighting and contouring is your eyeshadow/ eyeliner/mascara/lashes and you are good to go.

If you are someone that takes longer to apply foundation/concealer/highlight/contour/set, applying your eyeshadow afterwards is better for time management.

If you are doing a light eyeshadow look, is there really a need to do eyeshadow first?

Foundation first allows you to perfect the skin and see the face as a blank canvas before applying your eyeshadow.

If you are doing a heavy or dark eyeshadow look like a smokey eye or using a lot of colours, you can get a lot of fall out on your face that may be hard to remove. There are a lot of eyeshadow palettes that have eyeshadows that are incredibly soft such as the Anastasia Beverly Hills Modern Renaissance Palette and have a lot of fall out. Doing your eyeshadow after your foundation may be redoing your foundation/concealer in certain areas.

For me it depends on the look I am doing. If I am doing a smokey eye look or using a eyeshadow palette that I know has alot of fallout I will do my eyeshadow first. Just so that I can clean up any fall out or mistakes without messing up my foundation. If I am doing a light eyeshadow look, i.e a neutral look, I will do my foundation/concealer/highlight/contour first and spend a lot of time on blending and getting that flawless finish. One thing I always do though is eyebrows before anything else! Eyebrows before foundation or eyeshadow.
