Autumn is one of my favourite seasons of the year. Autumn and Spring (Spring simply because it is my birthday month!). Autumn is a time where you start packing away those summer clothes. You know that summer dress that shows off every likkle piece of skin or that shirt that is so thin but gorgeous. You can only wear it when the weather is guaranteed to be over 30 degrees! Your skin is glowing or super oily, depending on your skin type! Vitamin D everywhere! Everything looks better when the sun is shining doesn’t it?
In autumn (especially in the UK) it’s about rain, wind and more wind! Hold onto your wigs ladies! But I love the things associated with Autumn (if that makes any sense!). What colours do you think of when you think of Autumn (or ‘fall’)? I think of golds, browns, deep plums, bronzes, deep reds. Warm colours. Ooooohhhhhhh I love me some warm colours!!!! Yes! I think of cosy jumpers, boots etc.
Here are my things that are essential to get through Autumn/Winter.
A Good Moisturiser
As a black woman dry skin equals ashy! Walking around with grey toned skin is not the one! You need a good face moisturiser. To all the ladies who still use cocoa butter or Vaseline on their faces, girl stop! Just stop! Please invest in a good face moisturiser. It doesn’t have to be expensive. Oily ladies who do not moisturise, please do! You can get an oil free moisturiser. That keeps your skin hydrated but doesn’t leave you looking like a oil slick. I use Estee Lauder Hydrationist Creme which comes in two types: Normal/Combination and Dry.
A Good Winter Foundation
You probably know my thoughts on this, but if you get darker in summer, and lighter in the winter, you need to pull out your winter foundation. My winter foundation is usually a semi matte/cream foundation because I find my matte foundation such as Estée Lauder Double Wear too matte for autumn/ winter. I usually reach for my semi-matte foundations such as the HOURGLASS Stick Foundation, L’OREAL True Match foundation, and my new favourite is THE ORDINARY Coverage Foundation. These foundation give me a semi-matte base, and feels comfortable on my skin, without leaving my face looking and feeling too matte.
Warm Eyeshadow palettes
Your warm eyeshadow palettes are perfect for this time of year. Don’t get me wrong, you can still wear your cool toned bright colours (do you girl!) but warm colours are just bomb especially on medium and dark skin tones. I love Anastasia Beverly Hills Modern Renaissance and Juvia’s Place Nubian II palettes at this time of year.
I love whipping out the dark, vampy lipsticks at this time of the year. Yes I’m that person who has seasonal makeup! I just can’t rock super dark colours when the sun is shining, I reach for my pinks, my reds, even my oranges. During winter, I love MAC’s Retro Matte Liquid Lipstick in ‘High Drama’, MAC’s Matte Lipstick in ‘Sin’, Coloured Raine’s Cherry Blossom.
A Great Winter Coat
Lastly, a great winter coat is essential for this time of year. Now is the time to dig out your winter jacket. I love my wrap coat from Ted Baker, it keeps me warm and toasty during this cold weather. I can get away with wearing minimal layers underneath and still be warm. I did not want a coat that I needed 500 layers of clothes underneath because I tend to get hot quickly and over heat! It is not heavy. I love the colour of this coat. Burgundy/Maroon is my favourite colour at the moment. It goes with so much, and adds that pop of colour without being in your face. I particularly love the rose-gold hardware on the lapels, the belt and the buttons. Firstly I love rose gold, and secondly it just makes the coat look just that bit more expensive. This is definitely my winter staple this year and years to come.
