It’s really easy to get sucked into the idea that makeup has to be expensive to be good. Also, as a woman of colour, I don’t know about you but I got very used to the idea that I have to spend money on foundation in order to get my shade. I was just used to walking around UK drugstores and not seeing shades my colour.
Lately, I have been spending my time scouring the UK high street and drugstores to try and find good, affordable foundations, and here is a list of my favourite ones. These foundations are all under a tenner. Yup, all under £10. For some context, I am a MAC NW 44/45, my chest is lighter than my face, so my foundation is slightly lighter to ensure that my face and chest match.
Maybelline Fit Me Foundation
Shade: 55 Coconut
I picked up this when I went to LA because they didn’t have this shade to test in UK drugstores. What I like about this foundation is that they come in two types for different skin types. Dewy and Smooth which hydrates and evens skin tone, perfect for dry skin types, and Matte and Poreless which mattifies and blurs pores for combination/oily skin types.
This foundation is great. I love the coverage, it is not cakey at all, and blends out well. It is medium to full coverage foundation and it is amazing for all skin tones especially medium – dark skin tones. It had a great matte finish with I loved, and I stay matte all day when I wear it. It is a great foundation.
L’Oreal True Match
Shade: 8N Cappucino
What I love most about this foundation is that it is illuminating. You know the effect you would get if you mixed your foundation with an illuminator? This foundation is like that. You can actually see the gold in the foundation, while it is in the bottle. I love using this foundation when my skin looks dull and needs some life. It leaves your skin looking radiant and glowy. This foundation is hydrating and blends out well. I would say that this foundation is semi-matte, so if you are oily you would need a primer underneath and a setting powder on top. This foundation is great for dry to combination skin types. It has medium coverage but you could definitely build it up to full coverage, which I do quite often.
New Look No Shine Mattifying Foundation
Shade: Caramel Brown
I found this foundation by chance, just casually walking around window shopping as you do. This was the only dark shade available, and it happened to match my skin tone, so be mindful that there are limited shades available. I love this foundation because it blends out so well, it has the hydrating and non-cakiness that you get with the NARS Luminous foundation on my skin, but it has a matte finish. It really does control shine, and my skin stayed matte and oil free after 8 hours. This is a good foundation.
LA Girl PRO.Coverage HD Long Wear Illuminating Liquid Foundation
Shade: Warm Caramel (I should have bought Rich Cocoa)
This foundation is great. It is medium to full coverage which is fab. It is affordable and easy to blend. One thing I have to say is that you should be wary of the shade descriptions, I found them to be a little misleading. However, LA Girl’s formula doesn’t disappoint as usual, the formula of this foundation is great. It does what it promises at an affordable price.
Black Opal Stick Foundation
Shade: Black Walnut (contour)
I use this foundation as my contour shade, there are many medium to dark shades available. It has a creamy formula which is great for blending out and giving that natural, skin-like finish. However, this can be abit oily so if you have oily skin, I would set it with powder, and use a primer.
