Comparing Concealers for Medium to Dark Skin Tones | Tarte Shape Tape, Urban Decay, NARS & LA Girl

Hey guys, I can’t believe we are coming up to the end of January 2017! Where has time gone?! I picked up some makeup bits and bobs while I was in LA a few days ago, one specifically being the Tarte Shape Tape Concealer. My friend and I got this concealer at IMATS 2017, so we got it at a discount which was really cool. One thing that bugs me about Tarte is the fact that that it is not easy to get in the UK. They are not on beautybay.com or on cultbeauty.com, and these are the sites that usually distribute US brands in the UK. You can find it on QVC though even though I’m like who shops there?! I have tried a few concealers so I thought it would be cool if I could compare them to this concealer, and hopefully help someone especially with medium to dark skin tones when making a choice about what concealer to buy.

I will be comparing the TARTE Shape Tape Concealer, URBAN DECAY Naked Concealer, NARS Radiant Creamy Concealer and LA Girl Pro Concealer.

****

PRICES:

The prices for the NARS, Urban Decay and Tarte concealers are pretty much the same give or take £2-4. The LA Girl Concealer is by far the cheapest.

Tarte Shape Tape Concealer (with a blending sponge) is £28 from (here).

Amount of Product: 10ml

My Shade: Deep (14 shades available however there are only 6 shades on QVC UK)

*This concealer is the most expensive but you get almost double the amount of product for your money, so it works out cheaper.

***

URBAN DECAY Naked Concealer is £17.50 from (here)

Amount of Product: 5ml

My Shade: Dark Golden (8 shades available)

***

NARS Radiant Creamy Concealer is £22.50 from (here)

Amount of Product: 6ml

My Shade: Amande/Caramel (10 shades available)

***

LA Girl Pro Concealer is £5 from (here)

Amount of Product: 8g

My Shade: Fawn (21 shades available)

TEXTURE AND CONSISTENCY

Now, I am going to be completely honest here, so I don’t want y’all screaming at your laptops, computers or mobiles, saying that I am talking nonsense. This is just my humble opinion. What may not work for me, may work for you and vice versa, so I would say try and find a way to get a sample or try the concealers out. I will summarise my thoughts for each of the concealers.

The URBAN DECAY has been my go-to concealer since I have got it. It is full coverage but is lightweight on the skin, so it does not look or feel cakey. It is so easy to blend out and it does not crease. Let me say that again, it does not crease people! It lasts all day. My only problem with this concealer is the undertones of the shades, they tend to run neutral – warm which is great for women who have warm undertones.  However, if you have cool red or blue undertones, then you may have some trouble finding the right shade of this concealer. Also I feel like they need more deep – ebony shades for my ebony sisters out there.

The TARTE concealer is full coverage which I love. I love the fact that it isn’t cakey and it blends out well. It does set pretty quickly though so you have to work fast. It isnt as lightweight as the Urban Decay concealer and is a tad bit thicker in consistency. I like the bigger wand that comes with this concealer because you are able to spread the concealer to the areas that you want to highlight. Deep is the perfect highlight shade for me. This used to be the darkest shade available but thankfully Tarte has released two darker shades. I feel like I love this Tarte concealer as much as the Urban Decay. It is a close call, and I tend to decide on the day which concealer that I want to wear. They are both long-lasting and do not crease. Decisions, decisions, decisions!

The NARS concealer has received so much hype over the last few years, but honestly I was not wowed by it. I have met people who swear by this concealer, but it was not for me. The coverage in my opinion is more medium coverage which is buildable, not a full coverage, so I needed to use a little bit more. Also, the formula was too light in consistency for me. I also found that it creased, despite me using setting powder to set the concealer. Another thing I didn’t really like was the shades. I like my undereye concealer to be at least 2 shades lighter than my foundation. I find the shade Amande too close to my actual skin tone, probably just one shade lighter, and Caramel which is the shade directly before is too light for me. So I am probably in between these two shades. All in all, I wasn’t impressed with it, I ended up giving it away.

LA GIRL Pro Concealer was the ish for me! When I started to develop an interest in makeup, this was the first concealer I went for. No-one can take away from the fact that it is super affordable and easy to find. You can find it anywhere nowadays. It is easy to use. It has a thick consistency, thicker than all the other concealers, and it is highly pigmented. It does not have a doe-foot application but has a brush like applicator attached to the tube. It is full coverage and a little goes a long way. It comes in so many shades which is great, you could even use this concealer to contour. My only problem with this concealer is the creasing. It creases the hell up for me, no matter how I long I ‘bake’. It also settles into the fine lines under my eyes which I don’t like at alllllllll.

Nice post. I have been thinking about buying the Shape Tape cos everyone is raving about it right now, but the Estee Lauder Double wear concealer (which I never hear anyone talk about!) is a great one for me.
PS: Try QVC sometime, you’ll be surprised at what they have on there. The latest Tarte palette is on there right now.

No problem at all! Creasing is such a big deal for me, I can’t deal with any concealer that creases! Thank you for reading and leaving a comment 🙂

Hi Nancy, thanks so much for reading and commenting. I am a MAC NW45 and Shape Tape – Deep is fine on me. I know NC45 is a little lighter than NW45 but I dont think it will be too dark on you. It will probably be closer to your foundation, probably 1 shade lighter. It is two shades lighter than my skin tone. Even though it is called ‘deep’ it is still pretty light. The only thing to remember is that Shape Tape is more on the warm/yellow side. I hope this helps 🙂

Thank you so much for making this blog post!!! I want the Tarte concealer so bad but it’s so hard since there are no Ulta’s in Canada for me to see the correct shade. I googled and found your blog and see that we wear the same colours in Nars AND LA Girl!!!! I am so happy, so I will be ordering Deep in the shape tape right now after debating whether tan sand would be correct <3 thank you so much
