Hey guys, I am back with another post. To all my ladies who want to look good without breaking the bank, here are some ‘secret’ tips.
I really love the Kevyn Aucoin Skin Enhancer concealer, but I was not prepared to buy a tiny pot for £38. I just couldn’t justify it to myself or mr bank account! So I went in to space NK and asked for a sample and they were happy to give it to me.
The thing with samples, all you have to do is ask, and the sales assistant will get it for you. They may ask you if you would prefer for them to try it on for you but just politely decline and ask for one you can try at home. You can save yourself a lot of money, because you get the chance to try the product before you buy a full sized bottle especially the high-end brands.
Be aware that there are some products where for hygiene reasons or just practical reasons, you may not be able to get a sample of such as stick foundations, powder products, lipsticks.
Places that I know give samples: MAC, Space NK, Estee Lauder, Smashbox, Makeup Forever.
Get travel-sized products.
Travel sized products are a great way of trying a product without committing to a full sized product, and you will spend less money. BECCA Cosmetics are currently doing ‘Glow on the Go’ which is their travel-sized version with the Shimmering Skin Perfector in both the liquid and pressed forms for £20 (here) It is sold out online but you can look for it in Space NK stores. This is a great way of getting the BECCA highlighters without paying the full price. You can also get the Smashbox Photo Finish Primer, MAC’s Fix+, Urban Decay Primer potion, Urban Decay Setting spray and many more makeup products in travel sizes for less than £20.
Buy palettes instead of single products. You can get lipstick palettes, highlighter palettes and eyeshadow palettes which give you several colours, without you having to buy the single products. Although you might get less product but you have a better variety. For example, MAC’s studio Correct and Conceal palette costs £35 and it includes four concealers and two correctors. If you were to buy the concealers each it would cost you £16 each.
There are also lipstick bundles available with mini lipsticks which are considerably cheaper than the full sized product. Smashbox are doing 3 mini Palettes for Eyes, Lips and Face for £39 (here), Colourpop’s Can You Knot Lip Bundle for $15 (here), instead of buying each of the lipsticks for $6 each. Tom Ford’s Lips and Boys Lipsticks are the mini version of the full sized lipsticks, so you can get these lipsticks for £11 cheaper (here).
Schemes such as the ‘BACK to MAC’ scheme are great because if you return 6 containers of empty MAC makeup such as foundations, blushers you get a free lipstick. Who doesn’t like free gifts? Also, try and find discount codes for stores with makeup concessions such as House of Fraser, because sometimes you are apply to use these codes to get some money off makeup.
Lastly, if you want it, tried one sample, and you like it, just buy the darn product! Lol! Some of y’all have been using samples for years! Even the MAC counters know your face! Just save yourself the stress and buy the full sized bottle! You can spend money turning up, or buying food every night but you can’t bring yourself to buy a bottle of foundation?! Just buy it! If it is good quality makeup, it will last in your collection for months. Let’s do some maths (even though I am awful at it!), if your foundation lasts for 6 months, and it cost £32 for a full sized product, that is just over £5 every month! Which is less than a Chinese takeaway in some areas! So yeah, just buy the thing!
