Travelling on Short Haul flights | What makeup to take on short haul flights
I love short haul flights…especially with a toddler! Ok, I was being sarcastic about that toddler part, but I do love short haul flights or just trips away. Quick trips away are a great way of taking advantage of the extra days we get over bank holidays, or when you want to get away from London for a few days. Here in the UK we have restrictions to what liquids we can take on the plane as hand luggage, and usually for cheap flights, weekend trips most people just take hand luggage…well maybe that’s just me! Girl, I cannot be paying for extra luggage, after I went to spend all my money on the flight in the first place! I am not a jet-setting millionaire…yet!
Also, sometimes you might want to carry some makeup in your hand luggage so that you can come off the plane, looking like you have just stepped off the catwalk, not like me who usually has drool at the side of her mouth, sleep in her eyes, and hair looking like I have been dragged backwards through a bush!
I remember that fateful day when this liquid restriction law first came into place, and the guy at security said I had to throw away my precious foundation and other makeup. When I tell you I had to throw away perfume, and vital hair product, I was in disbelief. At first, I thought he was actually high and didn’t understand when I explained to him that these were important products! Then, I pleaded, I begged, I even tried to flash my winning smile! It didn’t work and he told me coldly, not understanding my heartbreak to throw them away else I will miss my flight. Silly guy! Yes, I know he was just doing his job but still!
So what are the Rules:
If you do take liquids in your hand luggage:

containers must hold no more than 100ml

containers must be in a single, transparent, resealable plastic bag, which holds no more than a litre and measures approximately 20cm x 20cm

contents must fit comfortably inside the bag so it can be sealed

the bag must not be knotted or tied at the top

you’re limited to 1 plastic bag per person

you must show the bag at the airport security point’.

Luckily, most liquid foundations come in 30 ml bottles. Praise God! However, if your foundation bottle is more than 100 ml, regardless of how much actual liquid is inside, they will ask you to chuck it. But remember that you must fit all your liquids into ONE plastic bag, so you need all the space. So I would advise you to get an empty small container and pour some foundation in there. Boots do travel sized products or you can even get them from eBay.

Travel sized Products

There are a few travel sized beauty products available so even if they are a little expensive based on the quantity of product that you are getting for the cost, it is actually better to bring them along. I love the Smashbox Photofinish Primer because the travel-sized version lasts for a long time. I got mine early 2015 and I am still using it. It is also great for taking abroad especially if you are going to a hot country because it is oil-free.

The Simple Kind To Skin Moisturising Facial Wash 50 ml is also a great product to take. If you are like me with sensitive skin, you cannot be using any soap or facial wash on your face, in case you break out. This is a great product to take along.

Don’t forget your suncream ladies! If you are going to a hot country, please do not be tempted to skip the sunscreen. Sun exposure causes premature aging and wrinkles. Yes! Black can crack! I always carry this Nivea Sun Pocket Size SPF30 50ml, to use on my body and very lightly on my face.

Liquid Lipsticks

I love the NYX Soft Matte Lip Creams, because they are small (8ml), I can take a different colours and switch things up. Admittedly they are not long lasting on your lips, especially if you are eating or drinking, but they are highly pigmented and do not dry out your lips, so reapplying is quick and easy. For my dark skin ladies, my favourite colours so far are Prague, Copenhagen, and Transylvania. There are so many colours available. I need to try more colours actually.
