10 things that I have learnt since turning 30

So when I turned 30, I thought I was going to have a mini breakdown! But I didn’t, I did a ‘Kanye’ shrug and just got on with things.

Here are 10 things I have learnt since getting older:

 ***

Accept that you are no longer a spring chicken! We 30s like to kid ourselves that we are still young, ‘age ain’t nothing but a number’ but we are no longer teenagers. We have responsibilities, those bills to pay, and we can’t just wake at random o’clock anymore. Bedtime is 10 or else we will be a walking zombie the next morning. Sleep is appreciated, anyone that disturbs your sleep or gatecrashes your weekend is an enemy of progress.

***

Accept that you look better and feel more confident in your thirties. In your twenties, you wasted precious hours wondering what people thought of you. Do my thighs look big in this? What will people think if I wore that? Now you can’t give a toss. You know what you like, what works for your body and on the flipside you have figured out what doesn’t work for you. If you like my body great…if you don’t…there’s the door! Don’t let it hit you where the good Lord split you!

***

What makes you weak in the knees is the thought of snuggling up on a cold day with your favourite drink in your hand either a glass of wine, hot chocolate with your favourite show or book. Who needs sweaty, noisy raves and parties when you can just have a moment by yourself?! I actually shuddered at the thought of those parties!

***

You start to look at the anti-ageing section, and looking for wrinkles in the mirror. Yeah I know black doesn’t crack, but are those lines I see under my eyes?!!!!

***

Going to the gym and not pigging out on junk food is the new way forward. Darn you metabolism that slows down when you hit a certain age!

***

The ‘9-5’ job is not going to make you rich and job satisfaction is worth more. In your twenties, you worked so hard to make that money, now you just can’t be bothered. You start to look for a way out. This can’t be it. In a few years time I will be reaching 40, I cannot be doing this for the rest of your life!

***

40 seems incredibly close, even though you still feel young. I will be 40 in ten years! Gulp!

***

You appreciate all the challenges, experiences, heartbreaks that you experienced during your teens and twenties, because they have made you a stronger and better person.

***

You really value the great people around you and start to appreciate everyone’s differences. Friendship needs to be cherished, because good friends are there with you through the good times and bad. Also, you become more confident with networking and approaching new people because you never know where help can come from.

***

You realise that if you do not love yourself, flaws and all, then who else can. In order to feel and understand what true love is, you must first love yourself.
