Shea Moisture Jamaican Castor Oil Leave in Conditioner | Review

Having a daughter has taught me and continues to teach me so many things. Lessons such as learning how to be incredibly careful during  those hair-washing days. The moment water or tear-free shampoo accidentally touches her eyes, it is a wrap! There is no more washing that can be done! Or learning the art of contouring your body into different, unnatural positions as you try and do her hair whilst she is sleeping, just so she doesn’t wake up. Or being ready to go into battle and mentally preparing yourself for the screams and wriggling because you can’t be bothered to wait till she is sleeping to do her hair!

I have realised that Afro Hair is not as complicated as I once thought. Afro hair gets dry quickly which causes breakage, and limits hair growth. One of the key ways to limit breakage, improve the quality of your hair and to grow your afro hair is to put moisture back into your hair. I noticed that when I decided to constantly moisturise mine and  my daughter’s hair every few days, it started to grow.

I love Shea Moisture products. They work so well with afro/curly hair, whether chemically processed, coloured or in its natural state. They get the formula spot on every time.

I picked up the Shea Moisture Jamaican Castor Oil Strengthen, Grow & Restore Leave in Conditioner, part the new Jamaican Castor Oil range. You can get this product in Boots (a UK drugstore) now. Yes I know! Finally hair types, other than straight European hair are catered for! Wohoooo! *Happy dance*

Here is what Shea Moisture says about this product:

‘Dream of smooth, soft curls or coils that you can run your fingers through without getting them stuck in messy tangles? SheaMoisture’s Jamaican Black Castor Oil Strengthen, Grow & Restore Leave-in Conditioner will make your dreams come true! This leave-in conditioner from SheaMoisture is an ultra-moisturizing hair treatment which forms a protective layer while reducing the appearance of split ends making your curls look healthier and shinier. This leave-in conditioner is a reparative hair care solution enriched with Jamaican Black Castor Oil rich in essential fatty acids which nourish hair scalp and promote hair growth.

Fortified with certified organic Shea Butter and natural ingredients like apple cider vinegar SheaMoisture’s Jamaican Black Castor Oil Strengthen, Grow & Restore Leave-in Conditioner provides nourishing hydration to dry, damaged, over-processed hair which supports hair elasticity and prevents hair breakage as you detangle your curls and coils. The peppermint invigorates hair scalp and leaves you with curls which look and feel healthy and refreshed.’

What I think about it:

I love it. It smells really good and leaves my daughter’s hair soft, shiny and moisturised. Even my husband has started using it. The only thing I don’t like is the consistency of the conditioner. It is runny. Very runny. However, it is still effective so I will probably transfer this product to an applicator bottle to prevent spills. Also, my advice is to use a little at a time to avoid that greasy feeling on your hair and hands.

I have read a couple of reviews where people have stated that they had rashes from using the product. However, based on my experience, my daughter and I have not reacted to this product and we both have pretty sensitive skin.

Your hair feels moisturised for 2-3 days, which is great and it doesn’t weigh down your hair. My daughter goes swimming and even with all that chlorine and washing her hair afterwards, her natural hair does not suffer because of this product. For £12.99 you get a 16 oz tub, which is not bad at all!

All in all, I love this product and will definitely be purchasing it again.
