“ColorBlend Makeup is a luxury cosmetic company with makeup products suitable for all skin tones, from the lightest English Rose to the darkest melanated beauty. Our makeup products are HD and Camera Ready, perfect for all those working with and front of cameras and gentle enough for everyday use for the general makeup wearer.”
I have always believed that we need more women of colour in the beauty and cosmetic industry, because it is clear that certain skintones are underrepresented. Kesha, as a woman of colour has started her own cosmetics company catering for all skin-tones, from light to dark. Her makeup products which includes foundations, lipsticks, contour palettes are of great quality and are worth every penny. Thank you Kesha for doing this interview with thatredlipstick.com.
What inspired you to start your own business?
I used to be an MUA 10 years ago when I was 19 and bit of a rebel. I worked at many different cosmetic counters and soon got bored. In 2011 fell pregnant with my son and was made redundant from my office job when my son was 10 weeks old. I searched high and low for a new job straight away and really started worrying about my income rather than enjoying my newborn. When he was 8 months, I started studying midwifery, however, I quickly realised that my childcare arrangements would not be suitable due to the hours and training. When my son was 10 months, I started my university to better my job prospects again. With a new child I realised that I didn’t want the life of running the rat race anymore and wanted to start my own business. In year 2 of studying, the vision of ColorBlend Makeup was born.
I actually believe that Kesha is amazing. It is inspirational to me that she was studying, raising a child and still found the time to pursue her passions. It motivates me to continue. She made the decision that she wanted to step out of the normal 9-5 and start her own business to give her son a better life.
I have noticed that you juggle a lot of things with your son. How do you do it?
I try to manage my time properly. I constantly battle the feelings of guilt. Am I giving my son enough time and attention? Now I understand that I can’t beat myself up about it. Everything I am doing is for him, especially in the long run. Don’t put too much pressure on yourself. Allow time for your friends and family. Your business should not take up every minute of your time. I’m very much learning how to work smarter and not harder.
I took some notes during this interview, not only for my blog but for my personal life. Kesha is speaking the truth!!
What have been your highlights?
My highlights have been actually getting my business off the ground. I found that external factors can be distracting and can hold you back. Don’t let things hold you back, including fear considering it is not real and plough through the obstacles.
My highlights have also been the masterclasses, events and getting brand exposure in the UK, the U.S, Iceland and Germany!
I love this!
What are your tips for starting a business?
Research your field and industry. Do your research. Find a niche and make your business stand out. Before anything, save and get capital for your business. Without a doubt, you will need to rid yourself of any internal fears that can hold you back and strive for the best! Only you have the vision and only you can execute it best.
Motherhood and business
We are women, and can multitask! My child is still and will always be my priority. Never lose hope, faith, strength and optimism. Keep on going. There will be days when you don’t feel like it but it helps to visualise the outcome and the destination where you want to be. Rest when you need to and utilise all of your support networks. My business advisor was always surprised at how, as a single parent, I managed university, starting and business and motherhood at once. I always said, if you want it bad enough you will do what it takes. Now I’m on the path and so grateful for it.
