To be honest, I didn’t understand highlighters before, and the need for it. I remember the craze on Instagram in 2015 and thinking ‘why is everyone getting happy about a shiny face?!’ Especially when the Becca X Jaclyn Hill highlighter came out. But y’all know me, I wanted to test and see what the big deal was about so I bought it. I recently went rummaging through my makeup collection and surprise surprise, there were other highlighters there, which i didnt even know were highlighters!
What are highlighters?
These are products that give you that sun-kissed glow. You know when you are standing in sunlight and the sun hits your face in certain areas? Highlighters basically mimics that effect. It gives you that reflective, dewy look. You can use it for a subtle glow or a standout highlight. I use this product as the last step in my makeup application to add an extra glow to areas such as the top of my cheekbones, my tear ducts and under the arch of my eyebrows.
Highlighters make your makeup look amazing.
How to apply it
I use a fan brush that I got from eBay to apply it. I love this brush because it does not apply too much product at one go. You should use a light hand with these highly pigmented products because if you apply too much you can look like you have just thrown oil on your face! Apply little at a time to get your desired effect. A little goes a long way with these products so take it easy. If you want the standout effect, you can apply some setting spray such as Fix+ to your brush before applying the product.
Here are some highlighters that I have:
BECCA – Jaclyn Hill Shimmering Skin Perfector: Champagne Pop (£32 – Space NK)
This is an amazing product which suits all skin tones. It is abit pricey but it is so highly pigmented that it will last in your makeup collection for a long time. You can use this for a subtle glow during the day or a standout glow in the evening. The choice is yours. At first I thought that it would be too light for my skin tone, but it was perfect. It has a creamy, velvety soft texture. It has peach undertones. I love using this highlighter to give me that standout glow.
MAC Mineralise Skin Finish – Gold Deposit (£24 – MAC Cosmetics)
This product is life for me, and it works so well with dark skin tones. It is like applying gold in a powder form to my face. It is a gold-bronze colour. My daughter smashed mine *sob*, but I still use it, even though it goes everywhere. It is long lasting and adds a natural glow to my skin. If I am going for a more natural, but sun-kissed glow, I pick up this highlighter.
FASHION FAIR Beauty Highlighter – Golden Lights (£14.68 – Boots / Debenhams)
This was one of the first highlighters I purchased, and compared to my other highlighters, it is not as pigmented as the other highlighters. I couldn’t really see the highlighter on my skin when I applied it. I mean, a highlighter that didn’t really highlight…no use for me!
SLEEK Face Form – Dark (£9.99 – Superdrugs)
This is an inexpensive but effective highlighter. I find it highly pigmented and a great alternative to the more expensive highlighters. The bronze highlighter is great for adding a natural glow and acting as a bronzer and the shade in the middle is great for adding a brighter highlight. It is a great highlighter. If you are new to the world of highlighters, this is a great product to start with.
