Makeup Primers | Are they an essential part of makeup application?

Makeup Primers | Are they an essential part of makeup application?

Do you wonder how to make your makeup flawless and how to make it last for day without sliding off completely? Primers are your answer. I would say a good primer is like good shapewear! You know those dresses that show every lump and bump, and you wear shapewear to smooth everything. After wearing the shapewear, the dress looks 100 times better right? Shapewear is not only for the curvy ladies, slim ladies can wear it too. The same with primers, primers are not only for the oily skins but for all skin types. It makes your makeup look and feel alot better.

Once I discovered primers, I cannot wear my makeup without it. It just feels weird. I started wearing primers last year. I think my makeup revolution began last year if I am honest! Taking my makeup from zero to 100!

Primers are great in your makeup collection and can last for a long time, because usually a little goes a long way. No matter what skin type you have, a primer should be an essential feature, as it makes a difference in your makeup application. I use my primer around the t-zone area of my face and under my eyes.

It helps your makeup to last all day. All of us have faced the struggle of walking out in the morning with a perfect flawless face of makeup, and it disappearing by the end of the day. One of the great thing about primers is that it helps your makeup to last throughout the day. You have primers that help reduce the oiliness of your face and create a matte base for you to apply your makeup. You have hydrating primers that hydrate your skin whilst creating a smooth base for your makeup.

It helps to smooth the texture of your skin. Most primers contain silicone which smoothes out the texture of your skin and creates a velvety base for your makeup to sit on. I love the texture of my skin after I apply my primer. I see a noticeable difference in the way my foundation looks when I use a primer first.

The great thing about primers is that it reduces the appearance of large pores and fills out fine lines, so when you apply your foundation the large pores are less noticeable. I find that when I wear a primer, the laughter lines around my mouth and the large pores in my t-zone area are less noticeable.

It does not make your face feel greasy and heavy. Before I understood the importance of makeup primers, I used to think that adding a primer would make my face oily. But I was wrong, primers do not make your face feel greasy, if they do, then you need to try a new one. They are supposed to make your skin feel velvety smooth without feeling greasy or heavy.

The key is finding the right primer for you. MakeUp Forever and Smashbox have primers for different skin types. There are primers for dry skin types, oily skin types, colour correcting primers. Also, don’t forget you can get eyeshadow primers such as the Urban Decay Primer Potion. This helps your eyeshadow last for the day.

Please do not use Milk of Magnesia to control oil for your face. Prolonged use is not good for your skin. It is not made for your face, it is created for indigestion! I admit that I used to use it, but I have stopped because it is not a cosmetic product, and only God knows the damage it can cause to your skin after prolonged use. I am not about to try and find out….I love this melanin honey! I need to look flawless for as long as I can!

Smashbox Primer – This is one of the leading primers on the market at the moment, and there is a good reason why. I love this primer, it lasts for a long time and it makes the skin feel velvety soft. It is great for my oily skin, and they have hydrating primers for people with dry and combination skin. I love the fact that they have travel sized products and the full sized products, so that you can try the product before you buy the full-sized version. I find that my makeup looks better when I apply this first. You can get this primer from larger Boots or Smashbox concessions.

MAC Skin Base Visage (Prep + Prime) – Now, I have to be honest, I do not like this product. I tried it and it did not make my makeup last and prevent shine. It created a smooth texture on my skin, which was great but I also want my makeup to last, and this product did not do that. I used it a couple of times, and now it just sits in my bathroom cupboard. I don’t even reach for it. Other people might have had better experiences with this product. If you have, let me know in the comments below. If anything, try it before you buy it, I could be completely wrong and it could work for you.

Becca Ever Matte Poreless Primer – This is my newest purchase. I have heard alot about this primer, specifically how great it is for oily skin types. It cost me £28 and I was unsure if it was worth it. Let me just tell you that this primer is the Holy Grail for combination – oily skin, especially if you want to wear semi-matte foundation but are worried about shine. This primer is mattifying with a capital ‘M’. It is definitely my summer primer. I don’t think it will work well dry skin types because it makes your face really matte.

To test it, I wore it under my NARS All-day Luminous Foundation which is semi-matte, which I love but disliked how shiny I got after a few hours when I wore it previously. Whilst wearing this primer, my foundation lasted without getting shiny, and it lasted for the whole day! To read my initial foundation review, click here NARS Foundation Review.

However, this primer did not work when I used it with my matte foundation – Estee Lauder Double Wear foundation, maybe because they are both mattifying products.

Like you rightly said, it just depends on whag works for you. I have pretty dry skin and I have tried different kinds of primer from Mac skin base to Estee Lauder and now trying a Dior skin forever and ever wear though. Hopefully I get the result that I am after.

    Interesting read Temi. xoxo
