BHA | Will this sort out your oily skin?

BHA | Will this sort out your oily skin?

I have heard about how amazing BHA products are for people who suffer from oily skin and hyper-pigmentation. To be honest, I really didn’t know too much about it, and how it could make a difference to my oily skin.

I have never really been a sucker for skin care products, and have not taken care of my skin until now. I just knew I had super oily skin which caused acne breakouts. I had hyper-pigmentation caused by eczema on my face and the texture of my skin was not smooth. There have been plenty of days when I would look in the mirror with horror asking why I was so shiny! If I had a magic wand, I would get rid of all my skin problems. But in terms of skin care products, I had no idea where to start from. What worked and what was just a beauty con?

I was recommended Paula’s Choice Skin Perfecting 2% BHA Gel Exfoliant. After using this product consistently for almost a year, I am still impressed. It leaves me with skin like the plain Galaxy chocolate bar – smooth, rather than Galaxy Cookie crumble – coarse and bumpy! (Excuse my analogy, I have chocolate on my mind!). My skin looks vibrant and is really soft after use. My complexion looks brighter, and not as dull as before. I use it consistently twice a week and I have seen a difference in my hyper-pigmentation.

WHAT DOES BHA STAND FOR?

BHA stands for Beta Hydroxy Acids and it works by getting rid of dead skin cells and revealing new skin. It also penetrates and unclogs pores. Do you have oily skin? Frequent spots? Whiteheads and blackheads? If yes, you might want to try this. Look out for products which contain Salicylic Acid (toners, gels and lotions). BHAs work best when they are absorbed into the skin so cleansing washes are not as effective because you wash it off.

DOES NOT PROVIDE SUN PROTECTION

I have to mention that this product does not provide sun protection. In fact because it is an exfoliant and you are exposing fresh skin, you need to slap on that sun cream afterwards! Yes, I said sun cream and this includes women of colour! That melanin does not prevent sun damage on your skin honey! Sun creams are for all complexions. I will be doing a post on this. I use this product with a moisturiser with SPF 30.
